An observation about signal, sufficiency and the moment you can move—vs. coverage, completeness and one more data point.

I've been thinking about when to stop looking.

Not what to look at. When to stop.

In an earlier View I wrote about a sphere balancing on the apex of a pyramid, and about intelligence whose job is to help it keep finding equilibrium rather than to flatten the ground beneath it.

I ended on a line I haven't been able to put down: in an age of abundant computation, attention becomes the scarce thing.

If that's true, a question follows immediately.

How much sensing is enough?

Walk into a dark room and wait.

At first, nothing.

Then edges. The shape of a chair. The pale rectangle of a window. The gap where the doorway must be.

And then—at some moment you couldn't name precisely—you cross the room.

You didn't wait until you could read the spines on the bookshelf.

You didn't wait for the room to be known.

You waited until you could move.

We keep building tools that wait for the bookshelf.

More coverage. More fields filled. More of the picture rendered.

Completeness feels like diligence. It looks like rigor. It photographs well in a quarterly review.

But completeness is a view from the center—a picture assembled for someone who will never have to cross the room.

The person crossing the room needs something else.

They need to know they can move.

Enough is a relationship, not an amount.

A fact is worth exactly what it would change.

That's the whole of it. If the next thing you learn wouldn't alter what you do next, then learning it isn't caution. It's collection.

Enough isn't a quantity of information. It's a relationship between what you know and what you're about to do.

Which means enough can't be set in advance, at the center, in a schema.

It's only ever discoverable at the point of action.

I've started calling it the Minimum Decisive Point.

The point at which accumulated signal becomes sufficient to drive the decision with confidence. Where one more data point would no longer change what you do.

Below it, you're guessing.

At it, you act.

Beyond it, you're completing for its own sake.

Not where the picture is full.

Where the picture is decisive.

Past that point, information stops informing.

This is the part I keep underestimating.

We treat surplus data as neutral. Unnecessary, maybe. A little wasteful. Nothing worse than that.

It isn't neutral.

Attention is finite and data is loud. Every signal pushed past the Minimum Decisive Point doesn't merely fail to help the person deciding.

It competes with the signals that would have.

Volume blinds.

So completion costs twice. Once to gather. Again in the only currency the person at the point of action actually has.

The point moves.

I want to be careful here, because this idea is elegant enough to over-apply.

The Minimum Decisive Point arrives early in systems that are alive and shifting. A clinician's practice. A season in a landscape. A room of learners. A little signal decides a great deal, and the next loop will teach you what this one couldn't.

It sits close to completeness where the mechanism is understood and a single mistake ends things. Anesthesia depth. A flight envelope. The load on a bridge.

There, the value of one more measurement stays high all the way to the edge—because the edge is fatal.

Same concept. Opposite instruction.

Which is what makes it worth having. A rule that tells you to move fast everywhere isn't a rule.

It's a temperament.

The goal was never to see the whole room.

Predictive intelligence asks how much of the picture we can fill.

Catalytic intelligence asks something smaller and harder:

Do you have enough to move—and do you know it?

The room doesn't have to be bright.

You just have to be able to cross it.
